The Green Jobs Training Scholarship Program offers updated green construction skills and certifications to the unemployed and underemployed.

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS CLASSES AT OIC OF BROWARD:

Employability skills are those basic skills necessary for getting, keeping, and doing well on a job. Employability classes include: "Business Etiquette", "Employment Documents", "Interviewing Skills", "Customer Service" and "Computer Skills". Instructional methods include: lectures, mock interviews, demonstrations, discussion periods, role-plays, videos, and practical application.

What does a Florida-Friendly Landscaping Technician do? The Entry Level Florida-FriendlyTM Landscaping Technician performs a variety of tasks, which may include: sod laying, mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, sprinkler installation, and installation of retaining walls. All of these typical landscaping tasks will be performed using the 9 principles of FL Friendly Landscaping: 1) right plant, right place; 2) water efficiently; 3) fertilize appropriately; 4) mulch; 5) attract wildlife; 6) manage yard pests responsibly; 7) recycle yard waste; 8) reduce storm water runoff; 9) protect the waterfront. This position requires course work in "Florida-FriendlyLM Landscaping"and employability skills in order to perform the associated occupational duties. This position requires you to be able to lift and bend while carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and the ability to work in Florida's unique climate and weather conditions.

What does a Solar PV Installer do? The Entry Level Solar PV Installer's tasks include the actual installation of the system, including transporting and fitting appropriate materials, according to national and local standards; testing of system components in order to ensure optimum system performance and safety. This position requires course work in PV installation and employability skills in order to perform the associated occupational duties. This position requires you to be able to climb ladders, carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and install it on a roof.

What does a Weatherization Technician do?
An Entry Level Weatherization Technician updates old or inefficient residential structures to make them more energy efficient. Tasks include installation of insulation, fans, blower doors, energy-efficient windows, and application of weather stripping, air sealing and caulking. These tasks require knowledge of energy conservation theory, air sealing and insulation techniques, general construction, safety and environmental awareness, and employability skills. In order to perform this job you must be able to bend, lift, and carry 50 pounds, crawl into confined spaces, climb ladders and use power/hand tools.

What does a Solar PV Designer do? A Solar PV Designer is eligible for a job in design and hardwiring the PV energy system to the power grid. The task of integrating a PV panel into a building's current wiring and electrical system requires a high level of skill to be completed by an electrician or engineer specialized in solar PV installation.

What does a Solar Thermal Designer do? A Solar Thermal Designer is eligible for a job in system design, installation and repair of solar thermal systems for residential, commercial, or industrial use. In FL this includes heating systems for homes, businesses and swimming pools. The task of integrating a water heating and plumbing system into a solar water heating system requires a high level of skill to be completed by a plumber, electrician, HVAC technician or engineer, who is specialized in solar thermal installation.

What does a Building Analyst do? A Building Analyst, also known as an Energy Auditor, conducts building performance audits, including measurement and verification services with related building analysis. Individuals may also specify, sell and coordinate and/or install certain building performance work. This position requires an advanced understanding of how a building works as a system, why some buildings fail, and how to use the latest building science technology to help resolve heating, cooling, base load and air leakage problems.

What does a LEED Green Associate do? A LEED Green Associate has an in depth understanding of green construction areas such as water management, project systems, energy impacts, waste management, and efficient energy utilization. This position demonstrates a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles and familiarity with LEED requirements, resources, and processes.

ELIGIBILITY

At a minimum, applicants must meet the following criteria to apply. Additional criteria may be required based on specific class pre-requisites.

  • • You must be 18 yrs or older.
  • • You must provide proof of education.
  • • You must be available and legally eligible to work in the U.S.
  • • All men born after 12/31/59 must be registered for selective service to be eligible for Dept. of Labor services, or show documentation why you were exempt. If you are18-25 and not registered you need to register at www.sss.gov before you can be enrolled. (The exception is if a person became a U.S. citizen after age 25. If you are exempt b/c you became a citizen after age 25, documentation needs to be provided, copied, and placed in your file.)
