OIC GREEN JOBS TRAINING PROGRAM

The OIC Green Jobs Training Program is funded by two grants through The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  The local purpose of these two grants, “Pathways” and “Energy Training Partnership” is to create new jobs and save existing ones by offering updated skills and certifications in the energy efficiency and solar power industries. Vocational training and basic education at Broward Technical Centers is paired with OIC of Broward County Employability skills training and support services.

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS CLASSES AT OIC OF BROWARD:

Employability skills are those basic skills necessary for getting, keeping, and doing well on a job. Employability classes include: “Business Etiquette”, “Employment Documents”, “Interviewing Skills”, and “Computer Skills”. Instructional methods include: lectures, mock interviews, demonstrations, discussion periods, role-plays, videos, and practical application.
Certificate: OIC of Broward County “Employability Skills” Certificate of Completion.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING AT BROWARD TECHNICAL CENTERS:

Solar PV System Installer – Entry Level*       Weatherization Technician & Installer*
Certificates: “Solar Photovoltaic Installer” or “Weatherization Technology” Certificate of Completion.

What does a Solar PV Installer do? The person doing this job is responsible for assembling, installing, and maintaining solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on roofs or other structures. Responsibilities may also include measuring, cutting, assembling, and bolting structural framing and solar modules. This position requires you to be able to climb ladders, carrying equipment and install it on a roof.

What does a Weatherization Technician do?
The person doing this job weatherproofs a building to protect it from sun, rain, and wind, and to make it more energy efficient. In this job you may find yourself sealing windows, doors, air ducts, and insulating walls, floors, ceilings, pipes and water heaters.

*Courses are approved by the Florida Department of Education and the School Board of Broward County and are based on similar training offered by Florida Solar Energy Center.  Courses prepare students to take the NABCEP Entry Level Certification Exam. The NABCEP exam fee is covered by the grant however the passing of the exam and resulting certification are the student responsibility.
